On the 23rd of July 2011 a new chapter was introduced into the history of the Cameroonian and African diaspora in Germany. With the Cameroonian ambassador to Germany and other dignitaries sharing our course, the first SOBA-NRW People Empowerment Forum was presented. The forum demonstrated the current and potential contribution of the diaspora to global development with a focus on Africa and Europe. "We are looking forward to next year" was the statement of the day as participants exited the forum to join the Cameroonian ambassador and catch up with the next highlight of the SOBA-NRW 2011 convention – A classical soccer game: Cameroon vs. Nigeria.
It was more than a game when the Cameroonian and Nigerian community gathered around the soccer pitch to watch another edition of Cameroon vs. Nigeria. The conversations outside the pitch gave an insight into how national and regional pride can be celebrated in a peaceful and entertaining manner, as the African diaspora integrates into the development of Africa and Europe. At the end of the game Cameroon won and the community was ready for the next highlight – The Gala Night.
The primer of Gala Night is the SOBA-NRW Community Award of Excellence. With this award we appreciate and honor a philanthropic individual who is active in empowering and positively impacting our communities. The Gala Night rounds up with the celebration of life as engraved in the African tradition of dancing. After awarding the 2011 laureate, Mr. Joseph Aurélien Kana, it was time to celebrate life and our guests did not wait a minute to hit the dance floor and enjoy the joy of life until after 07:00 AM (24th of July 2011).
